Behemoth - The Return of the Northern Moon

§ 0

This is legendary demo of one of famous bands on black/death metal scene. None of Behemoth’s subsequent releases has such spirit as this one. All their other albums sound too different and contain quite otherwise feelings. Only here, we can find primordial purity of really Black metal, the black metal that no one plays in our times. This amazing demo purports to be acknowledged as an album because of strong and serious musical and lyrical conception. It is not ordinary weak and penny-a-line odd job made by lazy yet ‘ideological’ teens, but almost masterpiece of blackest of the black musical genres.

It opens with low mystical sound of keys and nice hissing of cassette tape. ‘…Of My Worship’ sounds just terrible alike to the beginning black mass or other diabolic rituals, while I was listening to this majestic intro the horrible atmosphere deepened in the air. Here is simple but serious performance. In addition, there is no superfluous or far-fetched thing - just only descending darkness and preparation for vicious unholy and blasphemous obscurantism.

Minor tones in the beginning of ‘Summoning of the Ancient Gods’ give birth to morbid ungodly riffs. These riffs are excellent. Drums are surd deep and hypnotizing it sounds like some kind of ritual toms. Of course, vocals are malicious and morbid. Demoniac inhuman voice breaks through the thickness of sepulchral sound. ‘Mystic voices lead me to suicide… obscure my soul…’ It builds dark and dismal atmosphere of mystical or religious perversion. All next songs are amazing and great, all guitars sound perfectly during half an hour. Riffs have its main inspiration in the legacy of Hellhammer; they are evil, morbid but fascinating. Keys on this demo are most dark I have heard especially they create occult atmosphere of Devil-worshipping. Song by song you descend into depths of medieval obscurity.

Eventually, it is absolute masterpiece of old school Black metal, one of the very few releases where exists such kind of occult and mystic ambience. Unfortunately, it was the first and the last Behemoth’s release in that kind.

Morgoth - Ressurection Absurd [Demo Tape Version]

§ 0

A promising new young band from Germany with 5 songs of juvenile and over-enthusiastic death metal. Hah, weren’t practically all death metal bands like that in 1989? Their first demo (‘Pits of Utumno’) had a bit of a poor sound but this one proved to be a step forward, although still nothing more than a decent sound. Eventually Century Media released these recordings as an EP.

The song quality varies from decent to superb. Although the latter qualification would only fit the song ‘Selected Killing’. This song has a very eerie intro with soundeffects before thundering into uptempo raging death metal with a simple but harmonic riff and followed by Crewe’s best vocal effort on this record. In the middle of the song the intro is revisited and extended, resulting in one of the best and most frightening death metal songs ever to have come from Germany. What a great composition. This song alone is reason enough to get your hands on this EP, honoustly!
Furthermore ‘Dictated Deliverance’ and ‘Lies Of Distrust’ are two of the better songs.

Recorded at D+S Recordings. Mixed at Mohrmann Studios.

Century Media officially re-released "Resurrection Absurd" along with the "The Eternal Fall" EP on CD in 1990 (Germany) and 1991 (U.S.). This was reissued by Century Media in 2003 (with all tracks remastered) with four bonus live clips:
Live in Bayshore, New York 1991:
1. Burnt Identity
2. Lies of Distrust
3. The Travel
4. White Gallery
This same re-issue was officially licensed to Brazilian label Kill Again Records for the South American version.

Samael - From the Dark to Black

§ 0

Promotional demo recorded prior to "Worship Him", it sounds very close to the debut album, but it's rawer and darker. Not many copies were spread around, just some friends and fanzines got a copy, just like "Macabre Operetta", but this one was released without cover art, it was done only to get a record deal, not for sale.

Samael - Medieval Prophecy

§ 0

This is some incredibly dark and primitive black metal, especially for the late 80s. It's easy to see why Samael became such a prominent figure in black metal, but this recording isn't exactly brimming with excellence. Compared to similar old-school black metal demos, the production really isn't that bad, but that's not saying much. The songwriting is elementary, which is understandable considering how young these guys were, but this isn't exactly an engaging listen. Like their other demos, this one might be worth a listen if you're a fan of Samael's early work, but it's definitely not essential listening. In fact, you'd be much better off just going straight to Worship Him and avoid listening to their demos altogether.

Samael - Macabre Operetta

§ 0

To be Samael, the truth that this does not impress. One of his first demos, malgrabados, poorly played ... the very essence of the metal in no demo? The rule of thumb, however, are those gems that appreciate diehard fans and what the fuck we do? At least they can offer some ... evil! Oops! little mama! yes! Much evil, but good. That is, only for the fan and for anyone wishing to discover the Macabre Operetta itself.

Samael - Into the Infernal Storm of Evil

§ 0

Well, here and rained. Juuu which disk 87. A demo of Samael, rather cryptic, very dark but really not very impressed. It seems to have been recorded in a cave and it also provides some mystery because Samael and wore heavy dark that wave in them. Its primitive version of Into the Dark is a rip in his home to Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath. Hence, to give him up podrirnos Madrazos seem to say. And yes, the truth is that I could not say that this is a very lucky start, but if we talk about attitude and idea, the rates were much in the future and showed that they could do well just great music.
