Astaroth - Speed Black Metal (1983)

Sunday, December 2, 2012 § 0

Very early primitive speed metal with hints of British heavy metal and a genuine black metal feel akin to VENOM and fellow Italian madmen DEATH SS and BULLDOZER.  I think we have a seriously overlooked demo right here.  This tape manages to capture heavy, speed, black and even thrash metal vibes at the same time.  A few of the songs are maybe a bit too long, but the band delivers on the metal force with absolutely ridiculous vocals that are confidently nuts and totally perfect for an obscure black/speed metal enjoyment that the riffs provide.  "Hammer And Sickle" is definitely a classic metal song by any means, and the other songs are undeniably well-composed and replete with many riff switches almost in MERCYFUL FATE capacity, but decidedly more metalpunk in attitude and simplicity.  May take some getting used to with the vocals and garage-buzz production, but people like me were immediately thrashing in front of the speakers.

What's this?
