Horna - Sota

Horna's second EP is head above the murky waters that troubled the band's first EP. Ok so maybe they went up to par, or they had difficulties, and seeing it was their first one I didn't think it all that great but still had 2 or 3 songs that were good for the most part. On "Sota" the band goes back to the drawing board and comes back with only 3 but way better songs.

"Yhdeksän Yö" is very down-tempo more so than what one is used to by Horna. Around 3:04 the song completely stops and changes tempo to more faster trembelo picking and all of a sudden we here this obnoxious asshole screams "AIKAMME, JARJESTYS, TIETO, VALTA" into the microphone and you can hear his voice bounce of the walls. At first when I heard this I thought it was the most annoying thing ever, but then after a few listens it fell into place. You don't expect it coming and the rest of the song is super-speed fast Horna. "Haudankylmyyden Maille" starts off with these very weird weird ambient animal sounds and after hearing a cheetah roar we then get into a very thin guitar-sounding Horna track. The song starts off at blazing speed but then bumps it down to mid-tempo and then back to blazing speed and then later an ambient outro of fucking wind chimes. "Sota" starts out very Darkthrone sounding and then goes for more of a Burzum meets Gorgoroth meets Impaled Nazarene type sound which is essentially what early Horna was all about through the various tempo changes and riff changes.

On the positive side to this EP, it keeps the sound the same for the most part as opposed to the less-than-stellar "Perimä Vihassa Ja Verikostossa". And there's only 3 songs we have to sit through on this one. Outside of those two things the only downside is that this isn't a must have. Unless you are trying to complete your Horna collection to post on some random metal messageboard, then I don't think you will find anything interesting about this little piece of vinyl. Listen to it only when in the proper mood and tons of caffiene.
