Band: Black Witchery / Conqueror
Album: Hellstorm Of Evil Vengeance
Year: 2001
Label: Dark Horizon
Style: black war metal
Tracklist:
Black Witchery
01. Unholy Vengeance of War
02. Black Witching Metal
03. Summoning of Infernal Legions
04. Into Damnation Eternal
05. Demoniac (Blasphemy cover)
Conqueror
06. Ross Bay Damnation (intro) - Chaos Domination (Conquer the Enslaver)
07. Hammer of Anti-Christ
08. Domitor Invictus
09. Command For Triumph
Having heard Desecration Of The Holy Kingdom first, I have to say that although Black Witchery’s material on this split is still incredibly depraved and negative sounding, the production hardly makes the songs sound as rabid or as ripping as they could, but that doesn’t really matter. It’s fucking dirty, grinding, and ugly Blasphemy worship from start to finish - sure to pump up your adrenaline if you have a fetish for this sort of noisy brand of Blackened War Metal. Finishing off Black Witchery’s side is a killer cover of Demoniac. I was wondering how this would sound since Impurath’s vocal patterns are hardly anywhere close to that of Black Winds’ (but still fucking sick), but to my pleasant surprise he did a very faithful rendition of this cult ritual - more energetic than the original I’d say (though NOTHING will ever top the Die Hard Rehearsal version’s insanity!).
Conqueror’s bestial War Black Metal is the highlight for me (fuck off if you think I’m biased…Conqueror are one of the few bands to sound this insane). It starts out with the killer Ross Bay Damnation intro (later to be used again in Infinite Majesty and partially (read: a variation) in Vengeance Absolute) and then explodes into Chaos Domination. The corrosive guitars are much higher in the mix than any of Conqueror or Revenge’s releases, and the overall effect is a disgustingly pleasing wall of noise. Read’s drumming is beyond insane - really fucking fast and pounded out with conviction…a fucking holocaust. My favourite on this side of the split is by far Domitor Invictus - extremely NOISY riffing reverbed beyond recognition…this is just so oppressive and destructive sounding…fuck off if you don’t get it. Command For Triumph also deserves special note - the style is far more crushing and developed than any of Conqueror’s material, sounding more like the sort of annihilation that Revenge so mercilessly unleashed (Revenge should seriously consider doing a reworking of this song…it fucking destroys!).
Overall a very vehement split and well worth your money. Hail to Conqueror for leaving a lasting mark on Canada’s extreme Metal scene, and hail to Dark Horizon for unleashing this attack…
